Barnstable buys into OpenCape wi-fi plan

Published on Monday, December 04, 2006

The Barnstable County Commissioners have decided to make a $50,000 investment in a regional broadband and wi-fi project.

The project, dubbed OpenCape, is led by Cape Cod Community College, the Cape Cod Technology Council, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The goal is to install a wireless broadband network stretching from Bourne to Provincetown, according to OpenCape officials.

The project is expected to include a public network for higher education, research institutions, emergency facilities, and K-12 public school districts; and a commercial network for residences and businesses.

A second Cape Cod-based project in Orleans, known as Unwired Village, received a $136,000 grant last year from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative to create a municipal wi-fi infrastructure that could be duplicated across the state. The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative is quasi-state agency, which administers the John Adams Innovation Institute.
